4. Protect the foundation and build flexibility
Before making a long-term commitment, review emergency reserves, expensive debt, family insurance needs, and sustainable retirement saving. Employer matching contributions may be valuable. A strategy should be evaluated alongside those benefits rather than assumed to replace them.
Tax diversification means understanding assets with different tax treatment: taxable accounts, pretax retirement accounts, and qualifying Roth accounts. Cash-value insurance has its own rules and costs. A non-MEC policy may allow tax-favored access when managed properly, but a modified endowment contract (MEC), surrender, or lapse can produce taxes. The seven-pay test is a tax classification test, not a universal requirement to pay premiums for exactly seven years.
Review a difficult year: lower income, reduced dividends, or higher borrowing costs. Could you still meet premiums and essential expenses? Ask for contractual guarantees, surrender values, loan terms, and a written explanation of what happens if funding changes.
Self-check: Is the illustrated dividend guaranteed? No. Can a policy lapse with an outstanding loan create a tax bill? Yes.
